The gameplay is split between two main components: exploring the real world and battling in the Metaverse.

Real World: During the day, you manage your life as a high school student. You attend classes, participate in extracurricular activities, develop relationships (called Social Links or Confidants), and improve your skills. The choices you make in the real world affect your abilities in the Metaverse and your relationships with others.

Metaverse: As the Phantom Thieves, you enter a series of dungeons in the Metaverse, called Palaces, which represent the distorted desires of corrupt individuals. Each Palace is a complex dungeon filled with puzzles, enemies, and powerful bosses. The combat is turn-based, and you summon Personas, manifestations of your inner psyche, to fight enemies. You can fuse different Personas to create stronger ones, giving you a vast array of creatures to fight with.
